COMMUNITY NEWS

  • River Region United Way and Salvation Army are partnering to collect clothing, shoes, furniture (and household items) for families displaced by the Woodley Terrace fire; local donation centers will accept contributions through the week.  WSFA 12
  • YMCA of Greater Montgomery will host the 22nd Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service on Jan. 19 at 9:00 a.m. at the Cleveland Avenue YMCA. The event will bring neighbors together to honor Dr. King's legacy by serving the community.  WAKA 8
  • Montgomery Zoo introduced four baby ostrich chicks (Navy, Chickpea, Lima, and Green Bean) that hatched in Georgia and completed quarantine before debuting on December 22nd. They will soon join adult ostrich Gisele in the Africa section as they adjust to their new home.  Montgomery Chamber
  • The Montgomery Humane Society is featuring Pets of the Week with Cleo, a 3-year-old domestic shorthair cat who loves snuggling, & Nick, a 5-year-old terrier mix who happily greets people with a toy. Both are available for adoption today at the society’s front desk or online.  WAKA 8

CULTURE NEWS

  • Local church leaders hosted Montgomery’s 3rd annual Interfaith Service, reading sacred texts and offering prayer for an uplifting experience (bringing diverse faiths closer).  WSFA 12

  • Jackson Thornton Wealth Management was named to Financial Planning's Best RIAs to Work For list, ranking 25th among 60 firms based on a survey by Best Companies Group as announced on Dec. 30 in Montgomery.   • Drivers around the Mac Sim Butler Detention Facility in downtown Montgomery will face a changed traffic pattern this week as South McDonough Street stays closed.  WSFA 12
  • South McDonough Street is closed this week near the Mac Sim Butler Detention Facility in downtown Montgomery, so drivers should plan alternate routes. Local officials say a temporary detour is in effect until the closure ends.  WSFA 12

HEALTH NEWS

  • Alabama leaders propose to extend the rural hospital reclassification range from 35 to 50 miles to boost Medicare reimbursements and help hospitals attract staff — a move that could add $460 million but remains under review by CMS.  Alabama Daily News

  • Prattville flag football star Lanieya Page has been invited to join 32 top players at the NFL Pro Bowl + the event will showcase her talent on a national stage.  WSFA 12
