COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Funeral arrangements were announced for civil rights pioneer Claudette Colvin. Viewing is on Friday, Jan. 23 (1-7 p.m.) at Bushelon Funeral Home in Birmingham and the service will be Saturday, Jan. 24 (11 a.m.) at Greater Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church, with Rev. Dr. Michael Wesley presiding.  WAKA 8
  • Juliette Turner of Hope Hull turned personal tragedy into a mission to feed those in need by serving less fortunate neighbors. Her ongoing commitment to pay it forward inspires many across Montgomery.  WAKA 8

BUSINESS NEWS

  • SmartBank promoted Jay Baker to Market President for Montgomery County after Donna Cooper retired. Baker served as Corporate Relationship Manager for more than four years and built local partnerships to help the bank grow.  Montgomery Chamber
  • A Verizon outage that began Wednesday, Jan. 14 left over 180,000 customers, including many in Alabama, without call, text, or data. Engineers are working to restore service although no timeline is given.  WSFA 12

CULTURE NEWS

  • Montgomery's parks and rec department will host a silent sneaker dance for teens on Saturday, Jan. 17, offering an event where participants listen to music through wireless headphones.  WSFA 12
  • Alabama Shakespeare Festival will present 'The Lehman Trilogy' on its main stage from Jan. 29 to Feb. 15.  WSFA 12

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Autauga County Children’s Policy Council installed a vending machine with free children’s books at the courthouse in Prattville on Jan. 14. Courthouse security hands out tokens to young visitors, and a literacy grant from the Alabama Department of Early Childhood Education funded the project (District Judge Jessica Sanders said it benefits those waiting for court proceedings).  WAKA 8

SPORTS NEWS

  • Reigning area champions Park Crossing boys basketball beat Wetumpka 65-55 at home Tuesday night.  WAKA 8
  • Montgomery Biscuits will host a Fan Fest on Jan. 21 — inviting fans to enjoy pre-game festivities ahead of the baseball season. The event offers a chance to celebrate local sports and community spirit.  WSFA 12
  • Montgomery Catholic reintroduced Aubrey Blackwell as head football coach Tuesday after he led the Knights to their first state championship game appearance. He returned following a call from school officials and previously coached at Catholic from 2015 to 2020 (serving later at Benjamin Russell, Jackson Academy, Saint James and Spanish Fort).  WAKA 8
  • Defending state champion Park Crossing girls basketball beat Wetumpka 73-43 on Jan. 13 (its latest big win), showing strong teamwork that confirmed their top 5 ranking statewide.  WAKA 8
