COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Salvation Army (supporting all age groups) held a ribbon cutting for its new facility off Carter Hill Road on Friday afternoon; the building features a food pantry, clothing closet, worship center, and varied programs. Leaders plan to fund a proposed Center of Hope shelter.  WSFA 12
  • Salvation Army of Montgomery held a ribbon cutting for its new headquarters on Carter Hill Road, featuring a food pantry, clothing closet, and worship center. Captain Thomas Johnson announced plans for a homeless shelter to house and feed 75 people — the project needs community and city leader support.  WAKA 8
  • Local groups in Montgomery will honor Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on Monday, Jan. 19 with day of service events starting at 8AM at Riverwalk Stadium and parades beginning at 9AM downtown Prattville and 10AM downtown Montgomery — additional family programs round out the observances.  WAKA 8

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Kenya Vinson launched Southlawn Coffee Company in downtown Montgomery, combining his passion for coffee with his Midwest roots (bringing a taste of Chicago) as the new shop opens for local coffee lovers.  WSFA 12

CULTURE NEWS

  • Prattville will host MLK Day celebrations on Monday to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Local events will let residents come together to reflect on his lasting legacy.  WSFA 12

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Three education bills sponsored by Terri Collins passed the House Thursday and now advance to the Senate. The measures codify the Dolly Parton Imagination Library, expand loan assistance for teachers in acute shortage areas, and lower eligibility age for a college grant program for adults.  Alabama Daily News
  • Gov. Kay Ivey signed an executive order on Friday morning opting Alabama into a federal school choice program that gives donors tax credits for contributing to approved scholarship groups — the program, aligned with state laws, will allow eligible K-12 students to access scholarships across all school types starting 2027.  Alabama Daily News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Montgomery received clearance from HUD to demolish two long-abandoned hotels, with demolition planned soon to clear the sites for future use.  WSFA 12

HEALTH NEWS

  • Baptist Health opened a primary care facility on Vaughn Road in Pike Road yesterday with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. The clinic now gives adults routine checkups and urgent care — extending access closer to home.  WAKA 8
