  • 42 contestants arrived at Frazer Church on Sunday to begin their week-long preparations for the Distinguished Young Women competition in Montgomery. They will rehearse and join local events (lunch with the governor, a Cattleman’s Association visit, preliminaries Friday plus Saturday, and finals on Saturday night).  WAKA 8

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • In Alabama, wildlife officials note that during the rut — when bucks chase does — sportsmen find easier targets as some hunting areas extend the season into February. The 14 to 21 day period is a peak time for hunting given increased daylight movement.  Alabama Daily News

  • Today, MLK Day leads to closures for federal, state, and court offices, banks, and USPS while many retail and grocery stores remain open; Alabama combines the holiday with Robert E. Lee Day, and UPS operates limited services (FedEx runs on a modified schedule).  AL.com
