  • On MLK Day, dozens of Montgomery residents gathered at the Cleveland Avenue YMCA for the 22nd Annual YMCA Day of Service to clean neighborhoods, support a homeless shelter, and beautify a community garden + local college sports teams, sororities, and fraternities also joined in the effort.  WAKA 8
  • Montgomery Delta Sigma Theta alumni Mona Davis and Cathey Hendricks spoke with WSFA today to raise awareness for Human Trafficking Month. Their discussion informed locals about ongoing efforts to fight trafficking.  WSFA 12

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Tuesday, Montgomery City Council voted 9-0 to revoke Cedric Sanders’ business license for his restaurant—Can a Brotha Get a Slice?—on South Decatur Street after he missed payments on an agreed tax plan. Sanders was not present at the meeting.  WAKA 8

  • Children in Montgomery County took part in the Hands on Liberty program today to learn about good citizenship through interactive activities led by local educators.  WSFA 12

HEALTH NEWS

  • New CDC data indicates that the flu is proving more deadly for children as this season intensifies, leaving local health providers on alert. Montgomery parents are advised to schedule flu vaccinations while monitoring symptoms closely (details from health officials).  WSFA 12

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • A report from the Alabama Association of Realtors shows that home sales dipped 3% in December, though mortgage rates fell to a three-year low of 6.06% and local realtors are optimistic that increased January interest may lead to quicker sales.  WSFA 12
