COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Twin sisters delivered baby boys just hours apart at Jackson Hospital last December in Montgomery. The sisters had joked in childhood about sharing a birth and their family celebrated the rare event.  WAKA 8

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Hundreds of middle school students gathered at HMMA’s 5th annual robotics competition today to display their homemade robots and engineering skills. The event showcased local talent and hands-on learning.  WSFA 12
  • Alabama lawmakers approved a bill Wednesday to give military veterans a five-year temporary teaching certificate in K-12 schools — the program aims to boost veteran employment and classroom discipline even as rulemaking may delay veteran teaching until after next school year.  Alabama Daily News
  • Forty-two contestants met at the Cattlemen's Association in Downtown Montgomery for lunch yesterday to thank their host moms and learn about the cattle industry before the Distinguished Young Women of Alabama showcase begins. Preliminaries take place today and finals occur Saturday night.  WAKA 8
  • Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama held its fifth annual middle school robotics competition on Thursday for students from Autauga County, Selma, and Montgomery Public Schools. Today the event continues at the Training Center at 900 Hyundai Blvd with teams competing in skills trials and engineering matches — building technical expertise.  Montgomery Chamber

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Montgomery drivers face icy hazards this weekend as the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency urges slower speeds and vehicle checks when temperatures drop below freezing. Captain Burkett advises disabling cruise control and preparing a winter kit (blankets, tools, fuel) to help keep roads safer during severe weather.  WSFA 12

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Alabama Department of Public Health says residents can get screened during Cervical Cancer Awareness Month to help reduce the disease. Local clinics in Montgomery offer appointments throughout January so early detection can improve treatment outcomes.  WSFA 12
  • Troy University’s Montgomery campus and Baptist Health partnered on Thursday to launch the LPN to RN Bridge program that helps local nurses advance their education. The initiative addresses the critical shortage of nurses and aims to keep skilled healthcare workers here.  WSFA 12
