COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Make-A-Wish Alabama has launched a fundraising campaign using specialty license plates to support wish granting—$41.50 from each $50 plate goes toward giving a wish to a child. The nonprofit needs 1,000 pre-commitments by March 10 to produce the plates.  WSFA 12
  • Following a winter storm that blocked roads and left power outages, the American Red Cross launched emergency relief efforts today to supply food, cleanup kits, and financial aid to all affected families — local crews are using creative methods to reach households isolated by debris.  WSFA 12

  • A Hope Hull family began cleaning up after an EF-1 tornado tore their home apart Sunday, and the Heath family started a GoFundMe to cover repairs & temporary living needs.  WAKA 8

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Today, local law office Jinks Crows announced its second annual scholarship award program for college funding in Montgomery. The initiative supports qualified students pursuing higher education.  WSFA 12

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The stippled studfish, a freshwater species unique to Alabama, may soon gain Endangered Species Act protection as the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service reviews a petition from the Center for Biological Diversity. Pollution and drought have reduced its numbers to a few streams, heightening concerns for its survival.  WSFA 12

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • After a recent storm, the HBLB warned residents against unlicensed contractor scams and urged homeowners to verify licenses, addresses, and references before repairs, noting that illegal work in a declared disaster area may escalate to a felony + investigators are working with local law enforcement in affected neighborhoods.  WSFA 12

HEALTH NEWS

  • Baptist South’s emergency department reopened after adding more than 11,000 sqft and 30 new beds to boost patient care. The remodeled space now offers improved services for local residents.  WSFA 12
  • Baptist Medical Center South's remodeled emergency department is now open in Montgomery after a $14 million expansion added 11,000 sqft and 30 beds to serve about 50,000 annual visits, making it the only level 2 trauma center between Mobile and Birmingham.  WSFA 12
