COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ The Mid-Alabama Coalition for the Homeless will host a one-day service workshop at the Multiplex at the Cramton Bowl on February 4 from 10 am to 3 pm to provide people experiencing homelessness with services including clothing, eye exams, education & job training, health check-ups and housing assistance. - ➤ The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints partnered with America250 to donate 40,000 lbs of food to the Heart of AL Food Bank & provide support for local families. WSFA 12
ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ Yesterday, leaders from the Alabama Port Authority and Montgomery Regional Chamber toured the Montgomery ICTF, noting significant progress on the $100 million terminal featuring 272-acre improvements and new rail sidings; the facility will support containerized cargo and begin operations early next year. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Nick and Terry Saban visited the State House on Wednesday to promote the Tuscaloosa-based Saban Center for STEM learning, teacher training, and workforce development. Lawmakers approved $25 million in funding, and the center will open in 2027 (supporting career growth in education). Alabama Daily News
- ➤ McKee Middle School partnered with the Central Montgomery Optimist Club to hold a health fair for students a few hours ago. The event took place at the school and offered a chance for students to access health resources. WSFA 12
FINANCE NEWS
- ➤ Tax filing season shows key changes from the Big Beautiful Bill Act affecting deductions and exemptions. Taxpayers now benefit from inflation adjustments to tax brackets, overtime pay and tip exemptions, and seniors receive an extra $6,000 deduction, while the IRS offers free filing options (for incomes below $89K). GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The IRS began accepting 2025 returns on Monday using IRS.gov for easy filing — the agency expects 164 million individual returns before the April 15 deadline. WSFA 12
- ➤ Nehemiah Wahl’s campaign for lieutenant governor raised over $1 million in its first 24 hours after launching earlier this week. Records show major contributions from Monday through Wednesday include a $250,000 donation from a Birmingham donor + several others. Alabama Daily News
- ➤ The Montgomery County Commission announced the schedule for 2026 county clean-up days, with several community clean-ups planned across the county. Residents can plan ahead as additional dates are released by officials. The Montgomery Independent
- ➤ After severe storms left debris across Montgomery, city crews are working extended hours + will waive the normal 10-cubic-yard limit to clear yard and storm debris over the next few weeks. Residents should cut branches into 5-foot lengths before placing them at the curb. WSFA 12
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Local pediatricians advise that children waiting at bus stops should wear layers in cold weather to help prevent health issues, especially for kids with chronic conditions. Parents are encouraged to watch for shivering or pale skin as signs to add extra layers. WSFA 12
- ➤ With below freezing temperatures heightening the risk of hypothermia, Mercy House has been visiting homeless communities in Montgomery to distribute supplies and bus tickets to the warming shelter; the organization now seeks donations (to-go containers, plastic wrapped utensils, disinfecting cleaners and hygienic items) and funds to aid vulnerable residents.
