COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Montgomery Zoo honored its ZooTeens and Docents on January 27 for their volunteer service in 2025 + awards included Docent of the Year, 30-year pins, and a 1000-hour service jacket, with funding from the Montgomery Area Zoological Society.  Montgomery Chamber
  • Montgomery firefighters responded to a series of weekend fires and reported no injuries.  WSFA 12
  • Alabama Boys Foundation held its inaugural fundraising gala on Sunday as part of its 29-year effort to mentor and educate students in the River Region.  WSFA 12
  • Millbrook Revelers will host the largest Mardi Gras celebration north of Mobile with over 60 vendors at 9 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 7 and a parade beginning at noon, offering a festive day for families in the community.  WAKA 8

CULTURE NEWS

  • Iconic downtown Chris' Hot Dogs — a local favorite — will be featured in an upcoming documentary that highlights its history and impact on our community.  WSFA 12
  • Montgomery County Probate Court has invited local artists to submit original works celebrating Black History Month for an exhibition at Juliette Hampton Morgan Memorial Library from Feb. 13 to Feb. 28. Submit entries via email or in person to the Montgomery County Archives.  WAKA 8

EDUCATION NEWS

  • U.S. Rep. Terri Sewell announced that her office is accepting high school artwork for the 2026 Congressional Art Competition, which will feature the winning art at the U.S. Capitol. Students from public, private, and home school are to deliver submissions (Birmingham, Montgomery, Tuscaloosa, Selma) by Monday, March 2.  WAKA 8
  • Alabama State University will celebrate its 126th Founders’ Day on Friday, Feb. 6 in Montgomery, honoring the nine formerly enslaved men known as the Marion Nine who founded the school.  WSFA 12

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Montgomery County District Attorney Azzie Oliver joined WSFA this February to raise awareness about teen dating violence — a focus of Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month aimed at supporting healthy relationships among local teens.  WSFA 12

HEALTH NEWS

  • During American Heart Month this February, a survey by Ohio State Wexner Medical Center shows many people are unaware of key cholesterol facts, and local health experts urge quick screenings — a vital step to combat heart disease, Alabama’s top killer.  WSFA 12

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • The Montgomery Humane Society featured Pets of the Week with Lady, a shy 4-month-old kitten, and Alice, a spunky 2-month-old puppy available for adoption. Interested families can visit the shelter or check the website to learn more.  WAKA 8

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • New Waters Realty welcomed Evan Perry Taylor as a licensed real estate agent on Jan. 28 in Pike Road — a native with 13 years of design experience who helps buyers and sellers highlight every home's potential.  Montgomery Chamber
