COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Vicki Lammon, owner of Vicki's Lunch Van (Coliseum Boulevard), passed away this week, leaving behind a legacy of kindness and community spirit. Her staff said details for a celebration of life will be announced later.  WAKA 8
  • Rosa Watkins—Montgomery’s dedicated helper—has been recognized for stepping in with rides, errands, and more to support neighbors. Nominated for the Pay It Forward honor, she plans to use her $333 donation to continue aiding local community needs.  WAKA 8

CULTURE NEWS

  • On Sunday, Feb. 8, a free reception will open at the Ware-Farley-Hood House downtown, showcasing 70 local art pieces available for purchase. Additional viewing runs Feb. 14-15 and Feb. 21-22, offering visitors a chance to celebrate local talent — a community creative event.  WAKA 8

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Prattville Elementary School is launching its Read & Ride movement-based learning program today at 1:00 p.m. at the school gym using stationary work bikes for sensory breaks and academic support, funded by a $5,000 donation from Whataburger.  Elmore Autauga News
  • Montgomery Public Schools partnered with L-Evate Academy on Wednesday — the initiative provided students with the 'Life be life-ing' app to boost digital learning in local schools.  WSFA 12
  • Montgomery Public Schools launched an AI mentorship program on Wednesday at a press conference at McIntyre Comprehensive Academy, partnering with L-Evate Academy on its (Life Be Life-Ing app) to give students daily support; the district plans to expand the tool to more schools.  WSFA 12
  • Montgomery’s Foster Grandparents program seeks volunteers aged 55 and older to help local students improve their reading skills — the new volunteer program will launch soon and invites community members to sign up.  WSFA 12

HEALTH NEWS

  • On Feb. 20, the Montgomery Chapter of the Alabama Kidney Foundation will host its annual kidney walk and luncheon to support patients (details are provided in an official announcement).  WSFA 12
  • Darian Aaron and Dr. Shakita B. Jones will highlight HIV awareness as part of the HBCU Tour at ASU tomorrow— their talk aims to educate campus communities on prevention and available health resources.  WSFA 12
  • Reba, a stray dog with severe injuries, received emergency care at Montgomery Humane Society’s new in-house clinic where staff performed innovative surgery to repair her jaw and stabilize her condition. The clinic provides round-the-clock support, and Reba is expected to be ready for foster placement in a few weeks.  WSFA 12
  • Montgomery residents get a chance to help a neighbor by donating blood at the Give from the Heart Blood Drive on Friday, Feb. 13 — the event is open to all eligible donors.  WSFA 12

SPORTS NEWS

  • Avery MacNair, a 15-year-old cancer patient, will attend Super Bowl 60 after receiving tickets from Make-A-Wish Alabama. The teen's reward offers him an opportunity to experience the NFL championship game later this month.  WSFA 12
