COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Montgomery Whitewater launches its spring season in March with the ICF Canoe Slalom World Rankings Spring Race (March 13-15), Hootenanny (March 21), Down South Paddle Battle (March 27-29), Nature School starting March 7, and Spring Break Camp on March 16.  Montgomery Chamber
  • Gun violence survivors and mothers gathered in Selma to honor community leader Mark Myles and prepare for a statewide rally focused on expanding victim support. The vigil is scheduled for Feb. 24 at the Capitol — urging lawmakers to advance trauma recovery efforts.  WSFA 12

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Montgomery Symphony Orchestra premiered A Time for Jubilee at Davis Theatre in downtown Montgomery on Feb. 9; the performance (celebrating the 60th anniversary of the Selma to Montgomery march) featured local college choirs and soprano Laquita Mitchell.  WAKA 8
  • The Montgomery Art Guild opened its annual Members' Show today at its local gallery, showcasing work by local artists. Residents are invited to view diverse pieces (details on showtimes are available at the venue).  WSFA 12
  • The Lehman Trilogy is in its final week at the Alabama Shakespeare Festival + local theatergoers have one last chance to enjoy the acclaimed production.  WSFA 12

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Melissa Scott built McKenzie School's pre-K program and years later she is still teaching in the same classroom, showing her commitment to early education in our community.  WSFA 12
  • Students at MPS have launched a new mental health and violence prevention initiative to spark open conversations at local schools today. The project seeks to create a supportive space for peers to discuss these important issues.  WSFA 12

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Montgomery Humane Society introduces Pets of the Week featuring Tommi (a senior domestic shorthair who enjoys birdwatching) and Kirby (a 1.5-year-old rescued dog known for his friendly nature). Both pets are available for adoption and fostering at the shelter.  WAKA 8
