COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Montgomery hosted the Locked In on Love community activation to remind residents why they love the city. The event offered interactive displays and moments for locals to connect and celebrate their shared pride.  WSFA 12

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Alabama State Board of Education discussed new social studies textbooks and delayed a November vote as members debated whether to follow the committee's picks or amend the list. Superintendent Mackey will propose four options for a March vote — local schools must wait for updated materials before August's standards.  Alabama Daily News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A new Technology Quality Assurance Board has been formed to set ethical guidelines and security controls for A.I. and other digital innovations, with Dr. Jeffrey Bohler from Auburn University at Montgomery noting that balanced oversight will help agencies avoid resource overlap (the board includes members from seven state agencies).  WSFA 12

HEALTH NEWS

  • WSFA 12 News partners with LifeSouth Community Blood Centers for the 20th annual 'Give from the Heart' Blood Drive — local donors are invited to help save lives at this community event.  WSFA 12
  • The Alabama Department of Senior Services (ADSS) is boosting support so seniors can stay safely at home in their communities. The agency received over $2 million in federal grants for meals, mental health counseling, caregiver training, and respite services.  WSFA 12
  • Montgomery County Sheriff Derrick Cunningham advises families to secure homes for seniors by installing cameras, alarm systems, and keeping updated photos (and to consider the free Project Lifesaver program) as a safety measure for emergencies.  WSFA 12
  • Rep. Ed Oliver urges lawmakers to protect Medicare Advantage funding for Alabama seniors, warning that even minor cuts could raise costs and reduce essential services. Policymakers will decide the program's fate in a few short months & local seniors count on its affordable care.  Alabama Daily News
