COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Mercy House presented plans Tuesday to convert its building and five-acre lot on West Montgomery into a homeless shelter called The Haven — offering 82 beds and resources to help residents secure jobs and housing within 90 days. WSFA 12
- ➤ The new Alabama Veterans Resource Center opened along Dexter Avenue to offer services for local veterans. The center is ready to provide resources to those in downtown Montgomery. WSFA 12
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ A Black History Month art exhibit honors local Black heritage and is on display at the Juliette Hampton Morgan Memorial Library downtown. The show features paintings, photos, sculptures and other visual art and will continue through the end of February. WSFA 12
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Ashley Johnson, founder of Pivot Path, has been selected as Alabama’s State Advocate for Adult Education Fellowship. Her nonprofit will move into a new Montgomery facility that offers GED testing and training as she prepares to meet lawmakers for adult education funding. WSFA 12
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ On Tuesday (Feb. 17), the Montgomery City Council heard complaints from several apartment residents whose comments raised local housing concerns. Council members noted the feedback and may consider it in future policy discussions. WSFA 12
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Fresenius Kidney Care Tuskegee, the only kidney dialysis facility in Macon County, will close on March 18, leaving nearly 50 patients with less access to vital care. Tuskegee Mayor Chris Lee has urged officials to act to protect this essential service. WSFA 12
- ➤ Strong Tower Church will hold a free dental clinic with extra activities + food, games, bounce houses and childcare for all ages on Friday, Feb. 20 and Saturday, Feb. 21 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 2840 Boys Club Road. WAKA 8
- ➤ Lawmakers approved two bills Tuesday afternoon that remove co-pays and deductibles for breast and prostate cancer screenings for insured residents. SB19 now heads to the governor’s desk (targeting high-risk men) while HB300 moves to the Senate for further review. Alabama Daily News

- ➤ The Pleasant Grove Spartans beat Trinity Presbyterian women’s basketball team 49-42 in a playoff game yesterday, and they will face Montgomery Catholic Knights on Tuesday, Feb. 24. WAKA 8
- ➤ Montgomery Catholic defeated Bibb County (60-45) in a tight playoff game yesterday at the Acadome and will face the Fairfield Tigers on Feb. 24. WAKA 8
