  • DAS North America volunteered on Feb. 17 at Heart of Alabama Food Bank by packing food boxes for local families facing food insecurity, and their work strengthens community support for those in need.  Montgomery Chamber
  • Montgomery seniors celebrated Fat Tuesday on Feb. 17 at Asher Point Independent Living, enjoying Mardi Gras traditions with masks+ beads that brought a taste of New Orleans to their day.  The Montgomery Independent
  • Rep. Terri Sewell honored Selma civil rights leader JoAnne Bland, who died at 72 and helped lead the 1965 Voting Rights marches & co-founded Foot Soldiers Park. Her family said details about memorial services will be shared later.  WAKA 8

CULTURE NEWS

  • Montgomery’s 21st Annual Jewish Food Festival and Art Fair will be held Sunday, Feb. 22 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Temple Beth Or (2246 Narrow Lane Road). It will offer brisket, kugel, desserts and a juried art fair update at the Treasure Market, with shuttle from Huntingdon College.  WAKA 8

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The AHSAA affirmed that high school sports build character and teamwork alongside academics, stressing that programs support personal growth over scholarship pursuits. Officials say athletic programs remain integral to education in local schools.  Alabama Daily News
  • On Thursday, students, faculty & advocates marched downtown for Higher Education Day at the State Capitol, where student leaders signed a pledge while lawmakers listened during a special lunch on the lawn.  WSFA 12
  • The City of Montgomery Parks & Recreation Department announced that registration for the annual Kids & Teens Summer Program will open on April 4, offering local youth access to engaging summer activities.  The Montgomery Independent

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Lawmakers advanced a bill that would shift oversight of behavior analysts from a dedicated board (facing administrative review) to the Department of Mental Health, with the proposal set for the House floor on Thursday while parents and professionals express concern over possible impacts on service availability.  Alabama Daily News
  • Governor Ivey invited Alabama high school students to join a nationwide civics challenge as the nation gears up for America’s 250th birthday; the Presidential 1776 Award test is open online (Feb. 22 to March 1) with $250,000 in scholarship prizes available.  WSFA 12
  • At a recent city council meeting, a tenant said Highland Village Apartments has lacked water, heat, and safe conditions, and city inspectors will visit the complex this week. Council members also approved incentive pay for police recruits and passed a resolution to help keep Jackson Hospital open.  WAKA 8
