COMMUNITY NEWS

  • This weekend, Meredith’s Miracles Children Foundation will host Cookies with Characters (a family event) where kids support other children’s medical needs while meeting their favorite cartoon characters.  WSFA 12
  • Survivors Speak Alabama gathers survivors and advocates today at the Union Station Train Shed and state capitol to push for a longer victim compensation period and enhanced support for grieving families (buses arrive from Birmingham, Selma and Talladega).  AL.com

CULTURE NEWS

  • WSFA 12 News will air its Black History Month program 'Voices of Alabama' today. The show highlights art + heritage in our community.  WSFA 12

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Trenholm State Community College will host an open house to showcase over 30 academic programs. Prospective students can learn about available courses and campus facilities.  WSFA 12
  • Alabama high school seniors can apply to over 50 colleges for free during the Spring 2026 College Application Campaign Feb. 23—27. The effort waives fees at schools statewide and in nearby areas to boost access to higher education.  WSFA 12

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Montgomery Fire Department will graduate 23 new firefighters on March 6 at Montgomery City hall; the ceremony will honor recruits who completed 20 weeks of training in fire suppression, emergency medical services & rescue operations.  WSFA 12
  • Alabama farming leaders praise the new Farm Bill as the U.S. House Agriculture Committee begins review this week. The legislation makes the feral swine control program permanent and boosts research at Auburn, Tuskegee & Alabama A&M, which local farmers say will help stabilize the industry.  Alabama Daily News

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Council on Substance Abuse has partnered with the Chamber of Commerce to help Montgomery workplaces develop substance abuse prevention and treatment policies, according to program manager Britney Robinson & local community partners. The group also plans to expand support to veterans and schools.  WSFA 12

  • The Montgomery Humane Society introduced Pets of the Week on Monday, Feb. 23 featuring TicTac, a 3-month-old kitten, and Bunny — a 3-year-old terrier mix missing a front leg — both available for adoption at the shelter.  WAKA 8
