COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Claudenaisha Foster, a 13-year-old who missed her scheduled praise dance at a Black History program and was reported missing on March 1, has returned home safely, her family said. Her dance coach noted that her absence initially raised concern.  WSFA 12
  • Bernard Lafayette, a civil rights leader who taught nonviolence and organized sit-ins at segregated counters, died Thursday, Mar. 5 at 85 — his friends will honor his legacy with the Martin and Coretta King International Lifetime Peace and Justice Award at a Unity Breakfast in Selma this Sunday.  WSFA 12
  • Community leaders celebrated voting rights at the NAACP Bridge Crossing Gala while Ellwood Christian Academy performed Selma Again. A reenactment of Brown v. Board and reopening events at Montgomery Square and Brown Chapel AME Church are set for Saturday and Sunday at 7 p.m.  WSFA 12
  • Garrett Coliseum is set to host family events this March. The schedule includes a K-Pop show, truck demonstrations and the SLE Rodeo — with director Christi Thornton noting community bookings are welcome.  WAKA 8

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Hyundai Power Transformers USA announced on Friday, March 6 a $200 million expansion of its Montgomery manufacturing operations that will create 200 jobs and boost domestic production of large power transformers; a new facility is set to open mid-2027.  AL.com

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Montgomery Chorale will perform a free concert tomorrow, March 8, in Montgomery, inviting community members to enjoy live music + neighborhood spirit.  WSFA 12

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On Thursday in Montgomery, the House passed bills to expand career pathways by easing teacher shortages at public high schools and community colleges. The legislation incentivizes industry professionals to teach and fast tracks certification for experienced teachers, and it now advances to the Senate with 11 legislative days left.  Alabama Daily News
  • Auburn University at Montgomery has announced a new partnership to help international educators in public schools pursue advanced degrees in high-need subject areas today. The program aims to support teacher development and meet growing local education needs.  The Montgomery Independent
  • Alabama State University is hosting the Montgomery .AI Summit to show how artificial intelligence is changing learning, work, and public service on campus. The event will help locals understand how AI may affect everyday community functions.  WSFA 12

HEALTH NEWS

  • Faulkner University dedicated its new mental health center on Friday, March 6 — a ceremony that brought together community leaders, military officials, and university staff to mark the facility’s launch. The center now expands free counseling services for veterans and serves as a training site for health science students.  WAKA 8
