COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Ivy’s Closet partners with the Elmore County Department of Human Resources for its third annual gala to support foster families, with details on time and location to follow. Community members are encouraged to watch for further information about this event.  WSFA 12
  • The Shoppes at EastChase is gearing up for spring-summer events as families can expect an Easter Bunny greeting near its fountain from March 14 to April 11 and a Farmers Market serving Alabama-grown produce from May 9 through Labor Day weekend. General Manager Richard Holman outlined plans on March 10.  WAKA 8
  • The Central Alabama Aging Consortium will host Mayfest, a sockhop-style dance event for seniors at the Multiplex at Cramton Bowl on May 1 from 9AM to 1PM. Attendees can enjoy a lively morning of dancing and socializing.  WAKA 8
  • Tuesday afternoon in downtown Montgomery, the Kiwanis Club of Montgomery awarded $227,300 in grant money to 24 children’s charities across the River Region — funds raised through sponsorships and partnerships including the Alabama National Fair. Recipients expressed gratitude for the support aimed at youth causes.  WSFA 12

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Gulf Shores & Orange Beach Tourism launched its online Shoreline Supply store (opened January) where residents can buy t-shirts, hats and other items that promote Alabama’s Beaches and celebrate 50 miles of sugar‑white sand.  AL.com

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Alabama Department of Archives + History showcased an exhibition on Tuesday in Montgomery featuring artwork by current and former inmates that bolsters rehabilitation efforts.  WSFA 12

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Montgomery Public Schools (MPS) will host its first ever Special Olympics on Friday, March 13 at Park Crossing High School. Student athletes will have a chance to compete and celebrate their achievements in a local event.  WSFA 12
  • Construction on the new Percy Julian High School on North Eastern Boulevard is about 25% complete and will serve roughly 1,500 students. A traffic light (near Walter Craig’s The Sportsman’s Headquarters) is part of safety updates as crews work to open the school by spring 2028.  WSFA 12

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • U.S. Rep. Shomari Figures announced over $3 million in federal funds for Montgomery projects. The $2 million highway gateway project along Interstate 65 and Maxwell Boulevard and a $1.5 million innovation lab to boost tech skills will start in the coming months.  WAKA 8

SPORTS NEWS

  • Montgomery Whitewater (1100 Maxwell Blvd) will host the 2026 ICF Canoe Slalom World Ranking Spring Races from Friday, Mar. 13 to Sunday, Mar. 15. Nearly 100 international athletes will compete in canoe slalom, kayak cross and USA team selection events to earn world ranking points ahead of the 2028 Olympics.  Montgomery Chamber
