COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ The YMCA of Greater Montgomery opened registration for summer camps that offer day camp and overnight opportunities for children ages 5 to 17 to learn new skills, build friendships and unplug from technology+ readying them for an active summer. WSFA 12
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A federal grand jury on Thursday indicted three Pike County residents—including Brundidge Police Chief Samuel Cornelius Green—for fraud in a scheme that falsely claimed Emergency Rental Assistance Program funds, and they were taken into custody by U.S. Marshals ahead of an initial court appearance in Montgomery. - ➤ Police and medics responded around 7:30 p.m. on Montgomery's Troy Highway after a shooting left one person critically injured—authorities are still gathering details. WSFA 12
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Gov. Kay Ivey is urging lawmakers to pass two bills during the 2025 session: one banning cell phone use during school hours with limited exceptions and one granting eight weeks of leave for female teachers and two weeks for male teachers and state employees. The Senate passed the parental leave measure with a 28—3 vote while the cell phone ban remains pending in the House as legislators return from break. Alabama Daily News
- ➤ Alabama's community colleges made $8.1 billion for the state economy last year and helped create 114,043 jobs (according to a Lightcast study). The report shows that students with an associate degree earn more and that every public funding dollar returns $1.20 to the state. Alabama Daily News
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Senators Katie Britt and Tommy Tuberville briefed the Alabama League of Municipalities on their committee roles and a slate of bills aimed at supporting Space Command at Huntsville, expanding child care tax credits, and tackling the fentanyl crisis—efforts that include plans for FBI job moves and saving rural hospitals. Fairhope Mayor Sherry Sullivan also urged that municipal bonds remain tax-exempt to fund essential local infrastructure projects. Alabama Daily News
- ➤ The Montgomery bus station that holds the Freedom Rides Museum will not be sold after it appeared on a federal sale list that is now deleted–local lawmakers said the error should never have happened. State representatives and officials will push for new legislation to require Congressional approval before any historic site is sold. Alabama Daily News
