COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The 68th Annual SLE Rodeo runs at Garrett Coliseum until March 16 and shows bull riding, barrel racing and a 7 p.m. Saturday performance by TikTok star Southern Grandpa — drawing large crowds — while a parade on Dexter Avenue and free kids’ contests support youth agriculture — proceeds help fund scholarships.  AL.com
  • People retracing the steps of the original march completed their walk to the Alabama Capitol today — 60 years after the first march took place.  WSFA 12

CRIME NEWS

  • Montgomery police said a shooting last night on the 3500 block of Manley Drive left one man dead and one man seriously hurt—authorities are investigating the incident.  WAKA 8

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On Thursday in Montgomery, the Alabama Board of Education voted to intervene in Dallas County Schools after officials misused $12.2 million in federal funds while Gov. Ivey chaired the meeting. The board also approved an online alternative teacher preparation program and unanimously adopted updated teacher preparation regulations that take effect immediately— it will honor 124 new Purple Star Schools on April 10.  Alabama Daily News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The rebranded Alabama Workforce Department is speeding up its restructuring and branding by aiming to finish a plan framework by June and deliver a full strategic workforce plan by Feb 1st, 2027. The agency is set to move from its current Capitol-adjacent office to the Gordon Persons Building by July 1st — it may also seek additional state funding if needed.  Alabama Daily News
  • The Millbrook Area Chamber of Commerce traveled to the Capitol (March 5, 2025) for the first Chamber Day where more than 125 leaders from 40 chambers met with lawmakers to discuss key state issues. The event featured speeches by officials such as Lieutenant Governor Will Ainsworth and ended with remarks from Governor Kay Ivey.  Elmore Autauga News
  • Gov. Kay Ivey declared a state of emergency across all 67 counties for severe weather expected this weekend. The order takes effect today (March 15 at 2:00 PM CDT) and can be lifted earlier by a written proclamation if conditions improve.  WAKA 8
