NBA star JaMychal Green was honored Tuesday night at City Hall for his generosity and commitment to Montgomery.

He received the award for donating turkeys, school supplies and hosting basketball camps that help local youth — a legacy that began long before his NBA career.

Montgomery student Mikayla won the state Poetry Out Loud competition today — her clear recitation impressed judges, marking a proud moment for local education.

Rep. Jamie Lomax filed House Bill 364 to remove local food deliveries from the 8% Simplified Sellers Use Tax and apply local and state sales tax rates instead—an effort to return more revenue to community governments.

The bill was introduced in late February and is now with the House General Fund committee.

City of Montgomery has planned events to mark the 60th anniversary of the Selma-to-Montgomery voting rights march of 1965 (a reception on March 21, a Community and Family Fun Day on March 22, and a march reenactment on March 23) to honor the historic march.

City officials say the events (hosted by the city) will bring together national leaders, activists and local residents to look back on the march and talk about voting rights issues.

Angela Shepard tested Alabama’s voting machine by trimming photocopied absentee ballots in 2022—she and Rep. Debbie Wood now support a post-election audit bill that will hand-count ballots in one randomly chosen race after every election.

State Auditor Andrew Sorrell backs the measure to boost election security and public trust.

Alabama Rep. Mack Butler introduced House Bill 367 that would stop state and local agencies from using taxpayer funds to promote vaccines—any violation would lead to automatic budget cuts.

The measure exempts printed materials given directly to patients, and health officials warn it may limit vaccine information for vulnerable groups.
