CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Montgomery police opened a homicide investigation after Nathan Hogan II, 26, died from a gunshot wound on Tuesday morning (2400 block of Meadow Ridge Lane) just after 6 a.m., and the case remains under investigation. WSFA 12
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Alabama Agriculture Commissioner Rick Pate launched the Thank a Farmer initiative to encourage local residents to show gratitude to the farmers who produce their food. The campaign aims to educate consumers about the vital role farming plays in feeding families and supporting the state’s economy — a reminder of food security’s importance. WSFA 12
- ➤ The Alabama House passed a four-bill tax cut package that lowers the grocery tax from 3% to 2% and saves families at least $236 a year while providing an annual $192 million in savings. The package now moves to the Senate where lawmakers said the overtime tax cut is unlikely to be extended because it creates a significant cost—straining the education budget. Alabama Daily News
- ➤ The State Senate voted to make possession of a Glock switch a felony—lawmakers say the move aims to curb gun violence in the state. WSFA 12
- ➤ Gov. Kay Ivey signed Senate Bill 67 on Tuesday, reorganizing the chain of command at the Alabama Department of Veterans Affairs and naming retired Brig. Gen. Jeffrey Newton as commissioner. Newton served as interim commissioner for six months—he has a 41-year military career and will work with state officials to improve services for over 400,000 veterans. Alabama Daily News
- ➤ Today at the Cramton Bowl Multiplex, the Montgomery VA Regional Benefits Office hosts a free Veterans Resource Expo from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. where over 50 vendors offer legal, healthcare, and support services to veterans—if you cannot attend, the office is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 345 Perry Hill Road. - ➤ The Alabama Department of Examiners of Public Accounts required former Crenshaw County clerk Jeannie Gibson to repay over $209,000 in missing funds—she did not appear at the hearing to explain the issues. The audit covered records from April 1, 2020 through 2024 and followed her resignation in January while a lawsuit alleges she used clerks association funds for personal expenses—raising concerns about public funds.
