COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ The YMCA of Greater Montgomery announced it will run the Montgomery Miracle League at Edward Thompson Park on Ray Thorington Road, offering adaptive baseball for athletes ages 3 to 65+ and pairing each player with a volunteer buddy for support. WAKA 8
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Alabama's CHOOSE Act school voucher program received over 37,000 applications (20,665 new and 16,459 renewed) by March 9. Gov. Kay Ivey urged families to apply before the March 31 deadline for the upcoming school year and award notices will be sent on April 15. Alabama Daily News
- ➤ Pike Road Schools Superintendent Dr. Keith Lankford announced his retirement after four years and will resign June 30 to serve as assistant superintendent (overseeing projects including a new high school and renovations) before retiring Jan. 1, 2027, while the board begins its search for a new leader. - ➤ Montgomery Public Schools is hosting a Summer Feeding Job Fair for hiring positions in its Child Nutrition Program — including a Food Service Manager and food service workers. The event takes place Thursday, March 26, from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at 720 Grove Street. WAKA 8
- ➤ Alabama State University held an open house for the Montgomery Civil Rights Interpretive Center on campus. The center, a stop on the National Park Service Civil Rights Trail, offers educational exhibits (documentary video and bookstore) and is open Monday-Saturday from 9AM to 4:30PM. WAKA 8

- ➤ A Montgomery mother said a leak led to a ceiling collapse in her daughter’s room at Greenbriar Apartments—damaging property and leaving the unit unsafe as management made only patch repairs, while Councilman Mitchell said city inspectors will review conditions and urged tenants to call 311. - ➤ The Montgomery County Sheriff's Office hosted a public safety career expo Tuesday, March 24 in Montgomery to give community members a chance to learn about law enforcement career opportunities. WSFA 12
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ The UAB Medical Montgomery Campus will host a nutrition & diet conference on Thursday, April 16 at the RSA Activity Center on Dexter Avenue. Registration is required for free attendance. WAKA 8
- ➤ The Medical Association of Alabama is urging lawmakers to finalize a bill that would let schools use all FDA-approved epinephrine delivery systems — including needle-free options — for severe allergic reactions. Both legislative chambers passed their versions and the bill will be sent to Gov. Kay Ivey for her signature if approved. WAKA 8
- ➤ Central Alabama Water announced it will stop adding fluoride to its drinking water as it evaluates safety — aging equipment and high costs — for 770,000 customers. Local officials and community leaders oppose the change, arguing it risks dental health for many families. Alabama Daily News
- ➤ Alabama birth centers have asked the state Supreme Court for an oral argument to challenge a ruling that forces them to meet hospital regulations. They say the new ADPH rules will make it nearly impossible to operate and limit access to midwifery care in rural areas. AL.com
- ➤ Trader Joe's is recalling over 9.8 million pounds of fried rice and dumplings found to contain glass. The affected items (best-by dates Feb. 28 to Nov. 19) are sold in 43 states including Alabama and consumers should discard or return them. AL.com
