CRIME NEWS

  • Montgomery Police arrested a woman and two juveniles in connection to multiple armed robberies, the department said.  WSFA 12
  • Montgomery man Zedekiah Sykes, 58, (who had planned the crime for months) was arrested on Wednesday for orchestrating a four-man robbery at Jim Massey's Cleaners on March 10 in the 500 block of South Street where masked men bound and robbed owner Jim Massey, and he now faces federal charges including armed robbery, brandishing a firearm during a violent crime, and carjacking (his credit card helped tie him to buying the robbers' attire).  1819 News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Art submissions for the 2025 Congressional Art Competition are being accepted in Alabama's 7th Congressional District, where U.S. Rep. Terri Sewell said high school students (including private and homeschooled) must send in their artwork by Monday, April 21. The winning entry will earn roundtrip airfare for two and a year-long showcase at the U.S. Capitol.  WSFA 12
  • DiDi Hughes, an Alabama State University alumna, is hosting a conference today at ASU to empower young women with lessons on leadership, brand development and personal safety. The event marks the first stop on her nationwide HBCU tour, and one young woman will receive a scholarship in honor of her late mother (a retired educator).  WSFA 12

  • Dozens of quilters met downtown last Saturday at the Juliette Hampton Morgan Memorial Library for an Alzheimer’s and dementia awareness forum hosted by the Block-A-Month Quilting Club that showed fidget quilts made for people with dementia. The event honored longtime quilter Lois Brown and featured Sandra Ledyard sharing her family’s experience with dementia — adding a personal touch to the gathering.  WAKA 8
