COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Plantersville residents are still coping with loss two weeks after a deadly EF-3 tornado struck, leaving many with damaged homes and heavy hearts. Local churches and community members are providing care kits (including survival supplies) and clearing debris as they work to rebuild their neighborhood.  WSFA 12

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A crash on Sunday morning in downtown Montgomery destroyed a granite sign at Oakwood Cemetery—etched with the lyrics to 'I Saw the Light' and Hank Williams' image—and damaged several headstones, and a 2009 Dodge Caravan driver sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to a local hospital while Hank Williams' grave was not harmed.  WAKA 8

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State Sen. Greg Albritton will file a new gambling bill this week that seeks to legalize lottery sales and Class II electronic gambling at six racetracks to be decided by voters in a September special election. The proposal estimates $750 million in revenue—$250 million from the lottery and $500 million from other gambling operations—and directs funds to road projects, law enforcement, and health care while requiring a compact with the Poarch Band of Creek Indians.  Alabama Daily News
  • Alabama lawmakers are moving forward with bills to regulate cannabis products like delta-8 and THC drinks similar to alcohol, with proposals aimed at adding licensing, advertising rules and a tax. Rep. Andy Whitt’s HB445—prompted by past reports of child exposures—will soon be considered while Sen. Tim Melson works on a similar measure after his bill stalled in committee.  Alabama Daily News
