COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Jannah Bailey, president and CEO of River Region United Way, joined WSFA in the Bryan Jewelry Kitchen today to share her gumbo recipe + preview a cook-off benefitting Make A Wish Alabama. The event highlights a community effort to raise funds and celebrate local cuisine.  WSFA 12
  • The 22nd Annual Autism Crawfish Boil will take place Saturday, April 11 (3:00 to 6:00 p.m.) at DABOS Park, featuring mudbugs, live music, and baseball to benefit Easterseals Central Alabama. Ticket prices start at $50 for general, $100 for VIP, and $20 for kids ages 3 to 10.  WAKA 8

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Manufacturing Madness, an online tournament celebrating local innovations, had narrowed the field to four entries as of Tuesday and voters have until 11:59 p.m. Friday to cast their ballots—industry leaders will honor the winner at an April recognition ceremony.  WSFA 12

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A new bill called the VA Appraisal Modernization Act is proposed to boost the number of VA-approved appraisers and make home loans faster for veterans. The measure, announced by senators including R-Mont lawmaker Tim Sheehy, will raise fees in high-demand counties (effective Jan. 1) to attract more appraisers.  AL.com
  • The Alabama House passed a bill on Tuesday that will change reimbursement rates for ambulance companies from health insurers to boost healthcare in rural areas. Lawmakers say the move is designed to strengthen emergency services in remote communities.  WSFA 12

HEALTH NEWS

  • Montgomery lawmakers, researchers, and cancer survivors gathered inside the State House on Mar. 31 to raise awareness about cancer research + strengthen community efforts in public health, marking a significant step in local support for ongoing studies.  WSFA 12
  • The Alabama Kidney Foundation will host its annual Kidney Walk & Celebration on Saturday, May 2 at DABOS Park. Honorary chairs Will & Kelly Wilson (of Jim Wilson & Associates) and Pastor Michael McCurry will help raise funds for vital kidney patient services.  WAKA 8
