ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A person was injured Tuesday night in a Montgomery house fire—city fire officials said.  WSFA 12

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Hyundai’s largest assembly plant said it will not lay off workers today as tariffs on automobiles go into effect, noting that parts from Mexico are protected by the U.S. & Canada trade agreement. The company said tariffs on car parts will begin May 3 and it is evaluating whether to absorb any resulting costs & avoid raising prices for consumers.  WSFA 12

EDUCATION NEWS

  • U.S. Rep. Shomari Figures (serving his first term) will deliver the undergraduate commencement address at Tuskegee University on Saturday, May 10 at 10 a.m. in the Chappie James Arena. The university will also host graduate and professional ceremonies and provide graduates six tickets for family and friends (announced by the school) on May 3.  WSFA 12

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Sen. Albritton changed his draft gambling bill by increasing funds for roads as he seeks 21 yes votes from the 34 member Senate to advance a constitutional amendment on lottery ticket sales and expanded gambling. The proposal would allow sports betting at select racetracks and bingo halls and impose a 24% tax on net revenue—details that will be refined as legislative discussions continue.  Alabama Daily News
  • Lawmakers revised HB178 to require Ten Commandments displays in history classrooms and college buildings, instead of placing them in school common areas. Longtime advocate Dean Young (who pushed for displays statewide) criticized the move and urged Gov. Kay Ivey (who had promised displays in every public building) to address the issue as the debate will resume next week in Montgomery.  AL.com
  • On April 1st, the House passed three bills—one that establishes a legal framework for gun stores to temporarily hold surrendered firearms during mental health crises, another that permits borrowing an extra $500 million for a 4,000-bed prison in Escambia County, and a third that creates portable benefit accounts for gig workers. All the bills passed with votes of 93–1, 74–16 with eight abstentions, and unanimously respectively, and now await Gov. Kay Ivey’s final approval.  Alabama Daily News

  • Troy women’s basketball beat Illinois State 99-96 Wednesday evening after trailing by 10 points in the third quarter—Briana Peguero scored 28 points and the Trojans will play Buffalo in the WNIT championship game Saturday.  WSFA 12
  • Jill Clark, Montgomery Catholic’s multi-award-winning head women's basketball coach, announced her retirement to focus on family life and work on the farm—she will still serve in the school’s Physical Education Department.  WSFA 12
