COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Community updates include Southside Church of Christ holding a resource fair and Montgomery Therapeutic Recreation Center reopening after a $5 million renovation — 2 hours ago. Pine Level celebrated a new park at Liberty Fields, Trenholm State Community College marked its 60th anniversary, and Montgomery Catholic hosted Works of Mercy Day.  WSFA 12
  • Southside Church of Christ hosted a resource fair that helped nearly 800 families by partnering with local groups including the Heart of Alabama Food Bank + Alabama Office of Minority Affairs. Volunteers distributed meals and offered free mammograms so residents could access vital support.  WSFA 12
  • After a $5 million renovation that upgraded features including a new roof, flooring and pool area, the Montgomery Therapeutic Recreation Center has reopened to serve local residents with disabilities. Officials say the updated center provides safer, more accessible activities for community members.  WSFA 12
  • Vendor registration for Millbrook Mayfest opens now, with early set-up on Friday, May 15 from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. and complete set-up on Saturday, May 16 by 8:30 a.m.; booth fees start at $75 and applications are limited (vendors must sell only approved items).  Elmore Autauga News
  • Montgomery County Sheriff's Office is hosting its annual Easter Egg Hunt this Saturday, inviting families to enjoy egg hunts and fun activities in Montgomery.  WSFA 12
  • Mercy House and Common Ground Montgomery are hosting an annual benefit luncheon for youth on Thursday, April 9 + guest speaker Lauren Sisler will inspire attendees as the groups launch a year-long partnership to support local programs.  WSFA 12
  • Easterseals Central Alabama will host its annual Mudbug Ball to raise funds for autism services provided to local families in the River Region (the group’s largest fundraiser of the year expected to expand vital programs).  WSFA 12

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The State Senate approved more than $12 billion in an eight-bill education package today, setting the stage for increased funding for schools. Leaders say the legislation will boost state education programs + enhance student opportunities.  WSFA 12
  • Alabama State University will host its annual Black and Gold Week from Tuesday, Apr. 7 to Saturday, Apr. 11 by featuring campus events that celebrate school spirit & academics. Friends and family members are welcome to enjoy the festivities across campus.  WSFA 12

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Montgomery County Commission now accepts applications for its Summer Apprenticeship Program (for local students and young adults) to gain real work experience in government. The program will build skills this summer and remains open through the application period.  The Montgomery Independent
