CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Gun violence survivor Aswad Thomas was shot leaving a corner store and lost his basketball dream—he now travels with Crime Survivors for Safety and Justice to share his story and teach victims about their rights. He visited Montgomery to explain the victim compensation program and help break the cycle of violence. WSFA 12
- ➤ On Saturday, a man was injured in a shooting on the 2200 block of Cherry Street in Highland Park when officers took him to a local hospital (police have not yet identified a suspect), and investigators are looking into the incident. WAKA 8
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Montgomery Public School leaders announced Monday that three schools have been designated as International Baccalaureate—Johnny Carr Middle School and Park Crossing High School will offer the I-B-approved curriculum while Macmillan International Academy is reauthorized to provide the primary program and will meet with I-B officials this spring. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Alabama travelers must obtain a STAR ID or use an alternate Enhanced ID or passport to board U.S. flights starting on May 7. Applicants need to present four documents that verify identity, birth date, Social Security number and address at ALEA Driver License examining offices. AL.com
- ➤ Rep. Ed Oliver filed a bill in Montgomery to ban surprise ambulance charges by setting limits on what insurers pay for out-of-network rides—this move is meant to force insurance companies to add more ambulance providers to their networks. The bill will be discussed at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in the House Insurance Committee. Alabama Daily News
- ➤ Governor Kay Ivey signed Senate Bill 40 into law on Monday to create the SAFER Program, which will allow voluntary, temporary firearm storage to help improve veteran mental health and reduce suicide rates. The signing in Montgomery included military and health officials and honored veterans Houston Tumlin and Hunter Whitely. WSFA 12

- ➤ The Council on Substance Abuse opened its new TEEN Center Monday (5946 Monticello Drive) to help Montgomery teens facing challenges like substance misuse, truancy, and low school performance. The center will offer free tutoring, mentoring, and creative activities to support healthy growth and recovery. WSFA 12
