BUSINESS NEWS

  • Eugene’s Hot Chicken will open a new shop this fall at 79 Commerce building in downtown Montgomery — the space where Krab Kings once operated. The restaurant will serve spicy chicken with southern sides and desserts and already has two other locations in Birmingham.  WSFA 12

CRIME NEWS

  • Lorenzo Rainer (65) was sentenced on Monday to life in prison without parole and two consecutive life sentences after he was convicted of murder for fatally shooting Dana Riley in February and of second degree assault for shooting and injuring Shane Hill and Kevin Sides in January 2020.  WSFA 12
  • Prattville police charged a man with rape after he allegedly sexually assaulted a woman in a city park—investigators are continuing the probe.  WSFA 12
  • Two teens aged 19 and 18 were arrested Tuesday after the fatal shooting of 17-year-old Zaveon Simpkins on April 4 in the 3600 block of Madolyn Lane, and they are held without bond at the Montgomery County Detention Facility with charges of capital murder and first‐degree robbery.  AL.com

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Montgomery County Board of Education voted Tuesday night to name Dr. Zickeyous Byrd as the new superintendent of Montgomery Public Schools after a search that lasted several months and drew mixed reactions. Local leaders (including representatives from the chamber and church groups) criticized the board’s process as lacking transparency.  WAKA 8

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Sen. Katie Britt and Sen. Tommy Tuberville reintroduced the CONNECT for Health Act to permanently extend the telehealth flexibilities used during COVID-19 and help local clinics offer remote care. The bill would remove in-person visit rules and expand provider eligibility — a change designed to improve access for residents in rural Alabama.  Alabama Daily News
  • Lawmakers and political groups in Alabama are debating a lottery-only proposal ahead of the 2026 elections, with supporters saying it could generate up to $438 million in revenue and conservatives warning it would allow casino-style gaming—making a separate vote unlikely. Past efforts to separate lottery from other gambling forms have stalled in the legislature—further fueling concerns over financial mismanagement.  AL.com
