COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ On Tuesday, people gathered at Red Bluff Bar in Montgomery to celebrate Rivers of Alabama Day and toasted the state's 132,000 miles of waterways. Montgomery City Council member Andrew Szymanski said the rivers will help the city grow — his remarks highlighted plans to boost local ecotourism. WAKA 8
- ➤ Montgomery Crump Community Center reopened yesterday after $2.5 million in renovations at its 1751 Congressman Dickinson Drive location—Mayor Steven Reed said the project is part of the Montgomery Forward Initiative to boost local neighborhoods. WAKA 8
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A woman claims she was raped in Montgomery's Blount Cultural Park (10:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 5) when an unknown man attacked her on a walking trail before she escaped and received treatment at a nearby hospital as investigators pursue the case. WSFA 12
- ➤ A Montgomery County man was sentenced to life in prison without parole for killing Dana Riley and assaulting Shane Hill and Kevin Sides — using an AK-47 style rifle during a dispute over car parts — at county court on April 9th at 8:31 a.m. — he was convicted last month —. WAKA 8
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Alabama lawmakers are considering Senate Bill 305 today which would create a RAISE Fund to add extra money to the current K-12 system starting this fall. The bill sets weight percentages for school funds based on student needs and requires schools to submit annual plans and progress reports starting in fiscal year 2027—lawmakers and state officials will review its impact. Alabama Daily News
- ➤ The Governor’s Office said that over 22,000 applications have been submitted for the CHOOSE Act school voucher program, representing more than 36,000 students with over half attending private schools or being homeschooled. The program, which offers up to $7,000 for private school tuition and $2,000 for homeschooling costs, may exhaust its funding ($100 million) and families will be notified on May 1 (pending eligibility review). GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ A bill that would require PBMs (pharmacy benefit managers) to pay independent pharmacies at least what Medicaid pays plus a $10.64 dispensing fee per prescription passed both chambers Tuesday and was sent to Gov. Ivey for final approval. Lawmakers and pharmacy groups say the measure will help keep rural pharmacies open while some business groups warn that the added costs may be passed on to local employers and consumers. HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Today the American Heart Association held Alabama Lobbing Day to update advocates on three bills. The group urges lawmakers to pass House Bill 416 to add AEDs in schools and sporting venues, to offer free breakfast for all students, and to oppose House Bill 8 that fines students for vaping—arguing it unfairly penalizes youth. - ➤ Stanhope Elmore High School baseball coach Kaleb Shuman reached his 200th career win after winning nearly 85 games at Northside Methodist before joining the Mustangs in 2020.
