COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Girl Scouts of Southern Alabama delivered about 300 cases of cookies – a thank you for the 187th Fighter Wing's service – in Montgomery on Thursday. The donation marks a heartfelt gesture linking local supporters and the military.  WSFA 12
  • Child Protect Children’s Advocacy Center is hosting its annual Barrel of Blues Bourbon, Whiskey, Wine and Tequila Tasting at 1616 House on South Perry Street Thursday, April 16 from 5:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. to raise funds for child abuse victims, featuring live music, food, tastings, coffee bar + more.  WAKA 8
  • Local community members gathered on Thursday for a luncheon to benefit Map and Mercy House (the local food pantry serving residents in need). The event helped strengthen food support networks across the area.  WSFA 12
  • Dr. Nicovanna Shannon spoke on WSFA to stress that Financial Literacy Month reminds residents to review their finances; Brantwood Children’s Home hosts its Kickball Classic on April 11 + the Montgomery Kidney Walk occurs on May 2, while the Downtown YMCA holds Burgers, Brew + Blues on April 18.  WSFA 12

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Governor Kay Ivey announced nearly 49,000 student applications for the CHOOSE Act education savings account program for the 2026–27 school year after the application period ended at midnight March 31; families will be notified in mid-April (with funds usable starting in July), surpassing last year’s turnout.  Alabama Daily News
  • House and Senate leaders backed two bills to boost career and technical education for high school students; one bill allows businesses to share skilled workers for teaching plus offers a tax credit, while the other streamlines hiring of experienced instructors.   • Alabama’s HBCU App Build & Pitch Competition took place on April 8 in downtown Montgomery, where HBCU innovators gathered to hone their tech skills for real-world success.  The Montgomery Independent

  • Georgiana High School custodian Vicky Steel is recovering after suffering a stroke and has received widespread support from Butler County Schools staff and community members (school officials say her resilience is inspiring).  WSFA 12
  • Alabama officials are training dispensary employees — a required step before Callie’s Apothecary opens on May 4 in Montgomery, as advocates say guidance on how to obtain a medical cannabis card remains unclear.  WSFA 12
