COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Yesterday, Montgomery's Chisholm Community Center held a ribbon-cutting ceremony to showcase major renovations that added a new gym floor, basketball goals, and ADA compliant sidewalks. Mayor Steven Reed said the updates highlight the center's role in the community and that adults can use the open gym in the evenings and on Saturdays.  WAKA 8
  • Prattville/Autauga Humane Society is hosting Bark In The Park—an event offering dog adoption opportunities—so local residents can support the shelter while finding a new companion.  WSFA 12

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On Wednesday, a Senate committee in Alabama approved a record $12.1 billion plan for K-12 and college education. The package raises funding by about 6% for many programs and creates a new RAISE Act to allocate money based on student needs—steps that will guide spending into 2026 and beyond.  Alabama Daily News
  • The Montgomery school board voted Tuesday night to appoint Zickeyous Byrd as the new superintendent of Montgomery Public Schools—he is a local resident and former employee of the school system.  The Montgomery Independent

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Montgomery Zoo will host Earth Day Safari April 24-25 from 9:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., where teachers, students and visitors will join interactive learning with a scavenger hunt and zookeeper talks at 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.—school groups must reserve in advance to receive discounted admission and can add optional rides and giraffe feedings for an extra fee.  Montgomery Chamber

FINANCE NEWS

  • Next week, April 15th is the deadline to file both federal and state taxes — Montgomery residents should prepare their paperwork to avoid delays.  WSFA 12

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Alabama teen Lulu Gribbin, who survived a shark attack in 2024, met with lawmakers yesterday to urge a new shark alert system that will warn beachgoers when an unprovoked attack occurs — Rep. David Faulkner’s bill now moves to the full House for review.  WAKA 8
  • Today, the City of Montgomery has expanded its partnership with Service Line Warranties of America to offer homeowners a plan for water and sewer repairs for less than $10 a month—providing access to a 24-hour hotline for local, licensed contractors. Councilwoman Marche Johnson said the program has completed 100 repairs costing $61,478 and now serves over 1,000 residents.  WSFA 12
  • Lawmakers held public hearings earlier this week on two immigration bills aimed at curbing illegal immigration. Senate Bill 53 would require law enforcement to check the citizenship of those arrested and criminalize transporting undocumented immigrants while exempting attorneys and educators, and House Bill 297 would impose a 4% fee on outgoing international wire transfers to offset community costs from illegal immigration—both proposals face mixed support and will be voted on next week.  Alabama Daily News
