CRIME NEWS

  • A Montgomery man, 21-year-old Jalen Lamarcus Gunn, pleaded guilty to robbing two convenience stores in April and was sentenced to 111 months in federal prison with three years of supervised release—he used a gun to threaten clerks and stole about $5,500 in total.  WAKA 8

CULTURE NEWS

  • Jackie Bryant, a former art teacher, turned to painting after his wife died in 2024 and now holds private art shows from his Montgomery home. He paints local landmarks and military scenes—sparked by his mother's influence and supported by his faith—and says art helps him heal.  WSFA 12
  • Montgomery brings back its FLIMP! tradition from April 11–13 with the Flimp Festival at the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts—featuring art, music and a giant bounce house. Other events include an art show in Pike Road—plus a 5K fun run, an Eggstravaganza at the YMCA, and Bark in the Park for pets at Cooter’s Pond in Prattville.  WAKA 8

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Senator Arthur Orr said the Senate passed a record-high $12.1 billion education spending package on Thursday with $2.15 billion in supplemental funds for this year and $9.9 billion planned for fiscal 26 to boost K-12 and higher education; the Senate also approved a bill to revamp the funding formula to better support students needing extra resources. Lawmakers hope the House will take up the bills quickly.  Alabama Daily News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Alabama State Superintendent Eric Mackey got a new contract approved on April 10 that raised his pay from $292,500 to $325,000 after he opted for a lower increase following public concerns & the deal runs until April 2029 with benefits including a monthly housing allowance, professional development help, state car use, and possible one-year extensions with 3% annual raises.  Alabama Daily News
  • Alabama leaders in the Supreme Court, mental health and veterans agencies met on April 10 at the Renaissance Hotel to say better outreach is needed to help veterans with mental health. They noted that using veterans courts — which offer alternatives to incarceration — in rural areas can help veterans get needed support.  Alabama Daily News
  • On April 11th, the Alabama House approved a bill by a 98—1 vote that will let the Alabama Farmers Federation sell health plans not regulated as insurance. The bill, approved after nearly three hours of debate, will now move to the Alabama Senate and could offer a cheaper option for farmers and other members.  WAKA 8
