COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Jennifer Rutledge-Marable and Charlotte Smith from Fresh Anointing House of Worship provided details on WSFA about Women in Ministry's upcoming women's conference (Brace for Impact) to inspire local participation; official timing and venue are to be announced soon.  WSFA 12
  • Steven Tears of the Montgomery Humane Society introduced Corndog as the pet of the week today - local events include a Health and Wellness webinar during Extension Week, a Battle of the Bands on April 18 at the Multiplex at Crampton Bowl, and weekly Tuesday yoga in Millbrook.  WSFA 12

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Today at 10:00 a.m., the Montgomery Regional Chamber hosts the State of Schools program at 600 S Court Street, where education, business and industry leaders will discuss how Career and Technical Education builds a job-ready workforce for the River Region. The event runs until 11:30 a.m.  Montgomery Chamber
  • Alabama Extension Week is underway statewide, led by Governor Kay Ivey, and today a Health and Wellness webinar is held online (offering useful health tips) for residents.  WSFA 12
  • The YMCA of Greater Montgomery has opened registration for summer camps designed to keep kids engaged during their break and help build healthy bodies and minds. The camps will offer fun activities and skill-building experiences for the community.  WSFA 12

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Tax experts advise that if you have not filed your 2025 federal return by today, you should file an extension to avoid steep failure-to-file penalties — note that an extension only postpones filing, not payment, so pay any owed taxes to lessen extra charges.  WSFA 12
  • YesCare healthcare workers did not receive their scheduled paychecks last Friday, though ADOC confirmed payroll was processed on Monday—leaving employees waiting for payment while YesCare has not provided further details.  WSFA 12

HEALTH NEWS

  • Alabama Department of Public Health experts say the HPV vaccine prevents cancers and nearly 92% of cases are avoidable; Operation Wipe Out — launched in 2023 to end cervical cancer deaths by 2033 — urges vaccination starting at age 9.  WSFA 12

  • Devin Melton from Brantley High School and Braden Gordon from Montgomery Academy were named Player of the Year by the Alabama Sports Writers’ Association at the Mr. & Ms. Basketball Luncheon on Tuesday, Apr. 14.  WAKA 8
  • Montgomery Academy’s Rob Ashworth earned the Larry Striplin Jr. Scholar Athlete Award at the 2026 Bryant-Jordan Awards on Apr. 14, recognized for his success on the field + in the classroom with a 35 ACT score and a 4.9 GPA.  WAKA 8
