COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Montgomery will host the 10th annual River Region Disability Expo on April 22 at Alcazar Shriner’s Temple from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.—the event offers local vendors and expert panelists to help individuals find independent living services and resources. Started a decade ago by Rachel Hughes, the expo is free for attendees and supports disability advocacy in the region.  Elmore Autauga News

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Samkwang, a major supplier for Kia and Hyundai, will open a plant in Tuskegee—located in Macon County—in the near future.  WSFA 12

CRIME NEWS

  • Montgomery police are investigating a shooting that occurred yesterday at about 2:32 p.m. in the 1200 block of West Boulevard near Old Selma Road—where a woman sustained life-threatening injuries and was taken to a local hospital.  WAKA 8

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Alabama is on track to spend its $2.12 billion share of ARPA funds by Dec. 31, 2026 as officials reported progress on water, sewer and broadband projects while warning that separate federal grants for broadband may leave gaps if some companies do not finish their work. Lawmakers noted that over 200 projects are set to connect about 140,000 homes, businesses and public facilities (Sen. Bobby Singleton raised concerns over potential delays).  Alabama Daily News
  • On April 15, lawmakers approved a bill that creates a Public Education Employee Injury Compensation Board for public education workers and sent it to Gov. Ivey; they carried over another bill to let health care providers refuse law enforcement blood draw requests. The House passed a measure banning foreign national driver’s licenses as voter IDs and the Senate approved a law restricting ATV use on waterways without nearby property ownership—both moves now heading to the other chamber.  Alabama Daily News
