COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts offers a Book Talk on Sunday from 2 to 3 p.m. and a 'Mini Makers' kids session on April 18 from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., while Opelika’s Food Truck Friday runs today from 5 to 9 p.m. & local events support community causes.  WSFA 12
  • The Montgomery County Commission broke ground on a new community center in District 1 Thursday.  WSFA 12

  • Montgomery small business owners are urged to build a strong brand that goes beyond a logo by defining their voice, values, and design; research shows steady branding increases revenue and the Chamber offers local resources + networking programs to support businesses.  Montgomery Chamber

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Montgomery Symphony Orchestra unveiled its 2026–2027 season lineup after closing its 49th season Thursday at Davis Theatre. The schedule features a Special Event with Yo-Yo Ma on Sunday, Sept. 20 at 3:00 p.m., with additional masterworks and pops concerts later in the season.  WSFA 12

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Montgomery charter school L.E.A.D. Academy bought the former Whitfield Memorial Methodist Church at 2673 Fisk Road to create a dedicated high school campus for 9th-12th graders. The new campus will open for the 2027-28 school year (the academy currently serves pre-K through 11th grade).  WSFA 12
  • Faulkner University hosted its 'Eyes Up!' Safe Driving event on Apr. 16 where teen drivers practiced with a simulator during Distracted Driving Awareness Month and learned about the college's risk management program by partnering with the Social Sciences department.  WAKA 8
  • Faulkner University held its “Eyes Up” awareness program on Wednesday morning, where high school students learned how distracted driving can lead to crashes through presentations and a simulator. University officials + UA researchers led the discussions to promote safer driving habits among young motorists.  WSFA 12

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Ivey honored the 2025 Alabama Athletes of the Year at the State Capitol on Thursday by awarding certificates, medals and T-shirts to the honorees, including Montgomery pickleball player Jewell Pitts who was recognized posthumously. The athletes will compete at the Alabama State Games from June 12–14.  WSFA 12

HEALTH NEWS

  • The YMCA of Greater Montgomery will host its Healthy Kids Day (10:00 a.m. to noon, April 18) at Wilson YMCA on Wilson Park Drive, offering hands-on games, fitness challenges, and healthy snacks for kids and their families.  WAKA 8

SPORTS NEWS

  • Brew Tech named Justin Hannah as its first head football coach last Thursday at Brewbaker Technology Magnet. The Birmingham native with pro and college experience will lead the Rams as the school launches its new football program.  WSFA 12
