CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A Montgomery woman, Brenika McGhee, 26, was arrested on April 17 and charged with capital murder for the death of her 4-month-old daughter, Zuri, after police found the unresponsive infant on Fountain Lane Saturday evening+she is held at Montgomery County Detention Facility as the investigation continues. - ➤ Patrick Wheeler was sentenced to life in prison today for fatally shooting Ledell Flennory in July 2021—an outcome reached after his conviction in a Pike Road murder case. WSFA 12
- ➤ Daiyon El-Amin was sentenced to life in prison today — after being convicted for the 2021 murder of Leiah Holmes in Montgomery. WSFA 12
- ➤ Montgomery police charged a third suspect, an unidentified juvenile male, with capital murder in connection with the killing of 17-year-old Zaveon Simpkins, who was fatally shot on April 4 on Madolyn Lane following an attempted robbery—police had already charged two brothers on April 8 in connection with the incident. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Education bills advanced in committee as the Senate cleared a bill to allow off-campus religious instruction (passed by an 8 to 1 vote) and a measure letting homeschoolers access public school career technical classes (set to start in the 2026 to 2027 school year). The House also advanced bills tying school funding to reciting the Pledge of Allegiance and regulating pronoun use. Alabama Daily News

- ➤ A state judge ruled on Tuesday that a lawsuit claiming Alabama prisons removed organs from inmates who died without consent will move forward.
