COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Ivy Foundation of Montgomery will host its 4th Annual Derby Drawdown — a Kentucky Derby-themed event to benefit local youth — on Saturday, May 2 at 4:00 p.m. at the Renaissance Montgomery Hotel & Spa; tickets cost $60 and must be purchased by Apr. 24.  WAKA 8
  • Autism Support of Alabama will host the Alabama Walks for Autism on Saturday, Apr. 25 + the nonprofit aims to raise community awareness during Autism Acceptance Month.  WSFA 12
  • Child Protect is hosting its annual Barrel of Blues fundraiser, the advocacy center's biggest event of the year, to support local child care & protection programs in Montgomery. More details on timing and activities will be announced soon.  WSFA 12
  • Garrett Coliseum is hosting several local events over the next few weeks; a dog show by the Kennel clubs is on this weekend and a rodeo featuring bull riding + horseback riding is scheduled next weekend, with Dinosaur Adventure for kids on May 9-10.  WAKA 8

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Showtime talent show will feature gospel groups, comedians, dancers and poets competing for prize money. The event will take place on Sunday, Apr. 19 at Davis Theatre in downtown Montgomery with doors opening at 1 p.m. and the show starting at 2 p.m.  WAKA 8
  • Montgomery Symphony Orchestra wrapped up its 49th season on Thursday, Apr. 16 with a classical finale that marked the close of nearly five decades of music.  WSFA 12

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Young women from Wetumpka High School visited the Alabama Supreme Court on Thursday, April 16 to learn about law careers, mentorship, and leadership. Guided by local educators, they met judicial leaders who explained the legal system and inspired future career goals.  Elmore Autauga News
  • Alabama Cooperative Extension celebrates Extension Week in Montgomery County from April 12-18 at Auburn and Alabama A&M Universities, offering over 6,000 educational events and 14 online webinars that help residents learn practical, research-based solutions for every stage of life (from youth to retirement).  WSFA 12

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Millbrook is preparing a new Overlook Subdivision on 315 acres that will feature 452 residential lots. More details about the development are expected to be released soon.  WSFA 12

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Alabama State Games will begin with an opening ceremony on June 12, drawing athletes and fans together in a series of competitions across our community. The event promises a showcase of local talent and sportsmanship.  WSFA 12
