CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A Wednesday afternoon shooting on West Boulevard was classified as homicide after police confirmed that Keisha Wright, 39, died on Thursday from her injuries and her husband Freddie Wright, 38, was arrested — he was taken to the Montgomery County Detention Facility. WSFA 12
- ➤ Montgomery police charged 38-year-old Freddie Wright—accused of the fatal shooting of 39-year-old Keisha Wright on April 16 in the 1200 block of West Boulevard, where she died the next day. WAKA 8
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Alabama House passed the Laken Riley Act to stop the release of arrested undocumented immigrants and speed deportation (named for a 22-year-old student killed last year). The bill now goes to the Senate (its wording was softened after debate) as lawmakers split on its impact. Alabama Daily News
- ➤ In Montgomery, Alabama teen Lula Gribbin—who lost her left hand and right leg in a shark attack last year—was honored on the House floor as legislators passed Lula's Law to set up a shark alert system for beachgoers in Baldwin and Mobile counties. The bill now moves to the Senate as state leaders work to get it signed by the governor. Alabama Daily News
- ➤ The Alabama Senate approved Senate Bill 13—sponsored by Sen. Gerald Allen—that would require public schools to play the first stanza of the national anthem once each week; the bill passed 25—6 and now moves to the House. The Alabama House passed House Bill 179—sponsored by Rep. Mark Gidley—to allow volunteer chaplains for teachers, and if approved it will take effect on July 1 so that chaplains can serve on campuses by the 2025-26 school year while the bill moves to the Senate. - ➤ Dr. Brooke Robinson Benton opened her new private practice, TruCare Family Medicine, today in Montgomery to improve healthcare access by offering quality care for patients ages 17 to 100. The former Jackson Hospital doctor aims to inspire youth from underserved areas and is now accepting new patients— her practice focuses on holistic, community care. WSFA 12
