  • Carastar Health and the Montgomery Area Mental Health Foundation will host their first fundraising gala on Sunday, May 17 at 5:00 p.m. at the ALOE Event Center on Eastern Boulevard in Montgomery - tickets cost $125 with a tax-deductible donation.  WAKA 8
  • O's Cool Bike Foundation is hosting its fourth annual bike ride and walk to raise funds for Head Start programs serving lower-income families — the event will boost community spirit in Montgomery.  WSFA 12
  • Pentecostal Life Church will host its Community Care Fair Sunday, April 26 from 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at 3627 Stanley Street in Montgomery—offering residents the chance to meet representatives from home buyer services to wellness body scans.  WAKA 8
  • A new CAPTCHA scam tricks online users by changing a normal check button to show commands that install malware and steal personal info; local tech experts warn residents to close any page that asks for weird commands.  WAKA 8
  • Tuesday night, the Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office held 'An Evening of Remembrance' to honor lives lost to violence for National Crime Victims’ Rights Week.  WSFA 12

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Diageo unveiled plans for a new facility in Hope Hull, south of Montgomery, investing ($415 million) to boost distribution and create more than 100 jobs. Local officials, including Mayor Steven Reed, praised the state-of-the-art technology and strategic benefits for the region.  WSFA 12

CULTURE NEWS

  • Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts is hosting family art events, including an Art Crawl for infants and caregivers starting today and continuing on April 25, a Spring Plein Air and STEAM Family Sculpture Workshop on April 25, and a Hieronymus Bosch film screening on April 26 at the museum.  WSFA 12

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Selma University marked its 148th Founder’s Day with two days of events featuring an open house, luncheon and convocation. University President Stanford Angion noted the school has paid off a federal debt, grown enrollment, regained accreditation and plans to revive athletics and expand programs soon.  WSFA 12

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Tuesday, the Southern Poverty Law Center said it faces a Justice Department investigation over its past use of paid informants to monitor extremist groups & vows to defend its methods. The center, based here, emphasized that its work has helped protect lives.  WSFA 12
  • A Jefferson County judge dissolved a temporary restraining order on Monday that would have forced Central Alabama Water to add fluoride to its supply because the utility did not follow the proper (90-day) notice, leaving fluoride absent from the water.  WSFA 12
