COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A diverse group of local veteran service organizations have joined forces to form the River Region Veterans Coalition to support military veterans in Montgomery. The group will hold its next meeting on Monday, April 28 at 6:00 p.m. at Feast Buffet — located on Atlanta Hwy in Montgomery — to build a unified network of public and private support.  Elmore Autauga News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Two bills that require smartphones and tablets to automatically enable content filters for minors will be considered by the Alabama House after passing the Senate last week. Senate Bill 186 sets a June 1 effective date for devices and Senate Bill 187 mandates age verification for app downloads—both carried by Sen. Clyde Chambliss.  Alabama Daily News
  • Today, Montgomery held a ceremony to honor its emergency communications team during National Telecommunications Week, presenting awards for Dispatcher, 911 Operator, Supervisor, and Administrator of the Year and celebrating the graduation of new operators. The event also welcomed new staff to support the growing 911 service—underscoring the city's commitment to recruiting skilled workers for lifesaving roles.  Montgomery Chamber
  • City officials held an open house Tuesday evening at the Country Club Shopping Center—where residents reviewed maps and plans to improve pedestrian and bicycle access along Carter Hill Road and College Street. They said community feedback will guide a master plan funded by the American Rescue Plan Act—helping the city secure grants to begin construction in the coming months.  WAKA 8
  • House Speaker Nathaniel Ledbetter predicted a smooth end to Alabama's legislative session amid a recent dispute over delayed bills between chambers and said lawmakers aim to finish by the week of May 8—if Gov. Kay Ivey does not veto any legislation. He noted that key safety bills and a pending measure to reorganize the Birmingham Water Works Board will be critical in the session's final days.  Alabama Daily News
