- ➤ The family of a man fatally injured in an altercation with a Montgomery police K-9 officer is appealing a federal judge's ruling that cleared the city of wrongdoing. WSFA 12

- ➤ Legendary civil rights attorney Fred Gray was honored with a statue outside the Alabama State Bar Association on April 24th to recognize his work representing leaders like Martin Luther King Jr. and Rosa Parks. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Alabama Civil Appeals Court Judge Matt Fridy said he is recovering after a life-threatening heart attack last week and credited his wife (a pharmacist) for calling 911 in time. He thanked first responders and medical staff while asking for continued prayers as he works to return to his judicial duties. AL.com
- ➤ Local lawmakers held a public hearing on a bill to expand legal immunity for law enforcement — the proposal would let officers charged with excessive use of force request pre-trial hearings to decide if their actions were justified. WSFA 12
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ HPV vaccination rates in Alabama remain low with fewer than 40% of teenagers and only 19% of 11-13 year olds vaccinated, which increases the risk of cervical cancer especially in rural areas where Black women are hit hardest. Health officials say boosting vaccine uptake and ensuring proper follow-up on abnormal Pap tests is key to reducing the roughly 33 annual deaths—an effort aimed at lowering the high rates of this preventable disease.
