COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Woodland Creek will host its 4th Annual Memorial Day 5K run on May 25. Runners are invited to join the event to honor Memorial Day (please check local details for registration and route information).  WSFA 12
  • Montgomery Whitewater will pause on-water activities for about one month for water filtration system maintenance + its trails, ropes course, and Eddy’s dining remain available for visitors.  1819 News
  • At a Friday afternoon event at Renaissance Hotel in downtown Montgomery, WSFA 12 News VP Mark P. Bunting received induction into the ABA Hall of Fame and was named Broadcaster of the Year for 2026; the event also honored late WSFA figure Norman Lumpkin, known for breaking racial barriers.  WSFA 12
  • Montgomery Whitewater said it will pause all water activities for about a month—canceling this weekend’s All Forward raft races—so it can repair its filtration system, while its restaurant, ropes course, trail system and educational programs remain open.  WAKA 8

  • Pike Road Theatre Company presents Tuck Everlasting at Faulkner Theatre through May 10; tickets cost $25 with advance purchase recommended.  WAKA 8

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Alabama State University named Dr. Derrick Smith as its new director for the Mighty Marching Hornets. The Mobile native who graduated from ASU and led the trumpet section brings band experience from Jefferson and Mobile County schools — he also teaches at Talladega College.  WSFA 12

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Wildfire danger rises in Montgomery as drought and dry breezes increase fire risks in local forests. The state has issued a fire alert & restricted outdoor burning permits, urging residents to follow guidelines to reduce potential incidents.  WSFA 12

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Officials dedicated the Judge Preston Hornsby Sr. Memorial Highway on Highway 81 near the Tuskegee Commerce Park, honoring the late judge's legacy — a tribute to his service in the community.  WSFA 12

SPORTS NEWS

  • Dream Court Montgomery, a tennis nonprofit, hosted its sixth annual Montgomery Open (Wheelchair Tennis Tournament) at Lagoon Park on Friday. The national event showcased skilled athletes who competed for recognition and sportsmanship.  WSFA 12
  • Auburn defensive lineman Keldric Faulk was chosen as the 31st overall pick by the Tennessee Titans Thursday, Apr. 23 in Pittsburgh. He was honored on third-team All-SEC after recording 29 tackles, 2 sacks and 4 pass deflections in the 2025 season.  WSFA 12
