EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Alabama House approved a record $12.2 billion education budget on Thursday that will fund public and private schools, colleges, and other state education initiatives. House education budget chairman Danny Garrett said the package features historic increases—such as $101.5 million for a new education savings account program—and now awaits Senate concurrence before going to the governor.  Alabama Daily News
  • Alabama lawmakers passed the RAISE Act on Thursday—a new K-12 funding formula that allocates extra dollars to schools with higher student needs based on poverty, disabilities, and language barriers—and the act will distribute $375 million over three years while Senate concurrence is expected Tuesday before it moves to the governor for final approval. This reform, which operates alongside the existing Foundation Program, is seen as a major shift to better support students across the state.  Alabama Daily News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Alabama Senate committee advanced a substitute version of the 2026 General Fund budget that trimmed spending by cutting $2 million for an electric vehicle grant program, $3 million for broadband expansion grants, and $3.9 million for the Board of Pardons and Paroles. Legislators said they hope to restore the cuts when the budget is considered on the Senate floor Tuesday (some spending increases remain intact) and warned that future revenue is expected to decline (tax cuts have reduced income) requiring further fiscal adjustments.  Alabama Daily News
  • On Thursday, the Senate passed Sen. Clyde Chambliss’ Senate Bill 324 that expands the board from three to five members, requires Senate confirmation of each member, and makes the board choose its own chair — a power once held by the governor — after lawmakers raised concerns over low parole rates. The 16 to 8 vote now sends the bill to the House Judiciary Committee for further consideration.  Alabama Daily News
