COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Girls on the Run celebrated its 10-year anniversary at Cloverdale Park last Saturday with a 5K race that drew about 500 participants — including 175 girls, 45 volunteer coaches, and over 150 other supporters. The program has helped more than 2,000 girls from Montgomery and nearby counties develop confidence since 2014.  WAKA 8
  • Over the weekend, residents in Lowndes County celebrated unsung civil rights heroes by honoring Ruby Sales and Jonathan Daniels on Saturday as part of the historic Selma to Montgomery trail. Arthur Nelson Sr. of the Lowndes County Friends of the Civil Rights Movement urged locals to stay engaged in community efforts—reminding everyone that the fight for rights continues.  WSFA 12
  • At Sunday's Hoops for Autism tournament hosted by the Central Alabama Jaguars, funds were raised for the Bounce Buddies program, a basketball training initiative for kids with autism. The program is set to offer a supportive environment (including sensory items and personalized training) where children can enjoy and learn the game.  WSFA 12

CRIME NEWS

  • South Montgomery County man Parker was sentenced for killing Tyler Price and injuring Natalie Gibson when he shot into her home in Grady (in 2020).  WSFA 12
  • Montgomery nonprofit S.O.O.P. hosted its first 'Chop it Up' discussion Saturday to address youth gun violence—last year more than half of homicide arrests were suspects 21 and under—with speakers urging youth to make nonviolent choices. The organization will hold monthly events, with the next discussion scheduled for May 24 while details remain pending.  WSFA 12

CULTURE NEWS

  • The city of Montgomery hosted the Jazz and Seafood Festival at the Riverwalk Ampitheater on Saturday - the event brought local culture to life.  WSFA 12

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Capitol Journal examined a busy week in the Alabama Legislature with State Sen. Dan Roberts working on Birmingham Water Works legislation & State Sen. Kirk Hatcher offering insights on the RAISE Act and education reform.  Alabama Daily News
  • Alabama lawmakers in Montgomery are still working on several key bills on illegal immigration & bail reform as the legislative session winds down, with many proposals still pending committee and floor votes. Representatives like Chip Brown and Chris England remain hopeful their bills will advance before the session ends on May 8 or extends to May 13 if vetoes occur.  Alabama Daily News
