COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Central Alabama Aging Consortium, in partnership with ArchWell Health — its elite sponsor — will host Mayfest 2025 on Friday, May 2 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Garrett Coliseum in Montgomery where reserved seniors from Autauga, Elmore, and Montgomery Counties will enjoy a Derby-themed celebration.  Elmore Autauga News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Alabama Humanities Alliance is receiving $500,000 in donations to keep its cultural programs running amid federal funding cuts — philanthropist Hugh Culverhouse Jr. contributed $250,000 and the Mellon Foundation provided the other $250,000. The support gives the group time to secure long-term funding as it works to continue offering programs throughout the state.  AL.com

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Go Build Alabama launched a new training website that will be the state’s main destination for skilled trades education. The site will help construction and trade workers get the training they need.  WSFA 12
  • Go Build Alabama launched a new training page to provide better education access for construction and trade workers and it will serve as the state’s central hub for skilled trades training. The website lists career tech programs, apprenticeships, college pathways and certifications — and it will add new programs as they become available.  WSFA 12
  • After the Senate approved the $12 billion education budget Tuesday afternoon, the 2025-26 package is headed to Governor Kay Ivey’s desk for her signature. The largest Education Trust Fund budget in history uses a new hybrid funding formula that gives each student a base amount and extra funds for challenges — including poverty, special needs, English language learners, and gifted students.  WSFA 12

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A group of parents have sued the Alabama Medical Cannabis Commission, seeking legal review of its policies.  WSFA 12
  • The Alabama House passed a four-bill package in mid-March that cuts taxes by about $192 million, including a grocery tax reduction from 3% to 2% starting on September 1—while the Senate has yet to act. Lawmakers say they are considering amendments as the session nears its end.  Alabama Daily News
