ECONOMY NEWS

  • Parker said several national restaurant chains have reached out about opening in Pike Road. The Hometown Tour focuses on boosting economic development as community leaders explore new business opportunities in the area.  WSFA 12

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Yesterday morning, hundreds attended Valiant Cross Academy's Breakfast with the Scholars fundraiser at RSA Activity Center in downtown Montgomery, where former NFL and Alabama defensive back Jeremiah Castille spoke on his time with Coach Paul (Bear) Bryant; a private donor pledged $3 for every $1 raised, up to $100,000.  WAKA 8
  • AUM alumnus Pookie Wilson will speak at the spring commencement ceremonies on Saturday, May 9 at the AUM Athletics Complex. Wilson (an AUM Athletics Hall of Fame inductee) earned his degree less than six months ago and founded a local baseball mentorship program.  WSFA 12
  • Today, Pizza Hut and the BOOK IT! reading program launch a summer initiative for kids in pre-K through 6th grade that rewards free personal pan pizza when monthly reading goals are met; enrollment begins today (via the BOOK IT! app) and the program runs from June 1 to Aug. 31.  WSFA 12
  • Wallace Community College Selma and Craig Field Airport & Industrial Authority hosted the 14th Annual Aviation Day on Apr. 30 in Selma — local Black Belt students learned about aviation programs and met pilots who explained the industry.  WAKA 8

SPORTS NEWS

  • Military veteran Noah Galloway will serve as keynote speaker at the Athlete Leadership Summit during the 43rd Annual Alabama State Games, which will run from June 12-14 in Birmingham (opening ceremony at Legacy Arena). The event will feature sports such as bass fishing, mountain biking, billiards, and kickball.  WAKA 8
  • Alabama high school soccer playoffs enter the quarterfinals today, with games scheduled through Saturday as teams such as Montgomery Academy and Briarwood Christian vie to reach state championships at Huntsville’s Loretta Spencer Sports Complex (John Hunt Park).  AL.com
