EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Auburn University at Montgomery will graduate its largest class ever on Saturday, May 10, awarding about 733 degrees through two commencement ceremonies at the Athletics Complex (the first ceremony starts at 10 a.m. for graduates from the Colleges of Education, Nursing and Health, Science and Sciences and the second begins at 2 p.m. for graduates from the College of Business, Liberal Arts and Social Sciences and University College) with the events streamed online. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Alabama's Department of Economic and Community Affairs will launch an online auction tomorrow featuring surplus items such as computer equipment, a forklift, bulldozer, tractor trailer, and a basketball-shooting robot. The auction will run until May 11 at 6 p.m., and potential bidders can inspect the inventory in Montgomery from May 7 to May 9 + all sales are final. WSFA 12
- ➤ A Senate committee approved four tax cut bills on Wednesday that include a plan to lower the grocery tax from 3% to 2% in September and changes for machinery taxes, retirement income, and relief for lower-income workers—these bills now must return to the House for approval before moving to the Senate floor next week. - ➤ On April 30, Senate committees in Montgomery advanced a bill to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America for use from October 1, approved a tax incentive program that supports rural hospitals, and sent the Laken Riley Act to the Senate—while a cash bail reform bill died. Sen. Jay Hovey changed his vote after reviewing state budgets and new laws, and Rep. Chris England said he would bring his bail reform proposal back next year. Alabama Daily News
