  • City officials launched the Montgomery Thriving Small Business Grant Program to provide funds and support to local businesses. The program aims to boost business growth and strengthen the local economy with more details expected soon.  WSFA 12

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts offers family art events this week. Mini Makers for children ages 2 to 5 runs May 5 and 9 from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. and Meet Me: The Lover takes place May 8 from 11:00 to 11:30 a.m. —weather permitting, Sculpture Garden visits may occur.  WSFA 12

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Gas prices in Alabama jumped nearly 20 cents this week as seasonal demand and global factors raised costs to $3.97 per gallon, officials said. Local drivers now plan fuel stops more carefully + budget more effectively, a local AAA spokesperson noted.  WSFA 12

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • WAKA Action 8 News warns that severe storms are expected tonight through Thursday morning across parts of Alabama — areas northwest of Montgomery, Selma, and Alexander City face a heightened risk for tornadoes, damaging wind gusts, hail, and heavy rain.  WAKA 8

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Attorney General Steve Marshall said Tuesday at Hoover Public Library that an all-GOP congressional map could better serve districts—including one in Montgomery—as his office filed an emergency motion to pause injunctions ahead of the May 19 primary, fueling debate over fair representation.  AL.com
  • Alabama candidate for Secretary of State Glenda Jackson spoke with WSFA 12 News on May 5, sharing her views ahead of the Alabama Primary Election. Her interview explained the plans she would bring to the role.  WSFA 12

HEALTH NEWS

  • Dresses For Pink will host its first “All Cancers, One Fight” Summit on Saturday, May 16 at the Cramton Bowl Multiplex, aiming to raise cancer awareness and provide an engaging experience for those in the community.  WSFA 12
  • The Arc of Montgomery is closing today after losing certification from the Alabama Department of Mental Health. More than 100 service users will be transferred to other providers — some in Montgomery and some outside — to continue receiving support.  WSFA 12
