Montgomery Habitat For Humanity hosted a successful build day on May 3 with help from volunteers at State Farm, Willie Durham State Farm Agency, and the U.S. Air Force Senior Non-commissioned (NCO) Academy; organizers plan more build days in the future.

At its annual charity luncheon held yesterday at the RSA Activity Center downtown, the Montgomery Rotary Club awarded $5,000 to the Cancer Wellness Foundation, over $9,500 to Churchill Academy, and $10,000 to MANE to support youth education + community wellness and the arts.

Troy University Chancellor Dr. Jack Hawkins served as the keynote speaker while President-elect Kimberly Baker said the club narrowed more than 50 applicants to these three nonprofits.

Yesterday, Marion Community Bank held a groundbreaking in Pike Road for a new branch on Chantilly Parkway to replace its old location on Halcyon Pointe Drive.

Gov. Ivey reluctantly approved a nearly $255k settlement with former Pharmacy Board head Donna Yeatman—she received $150k as a lump sum plus almost $106k for accrued leave—to comply with an executive order, while lawmakers say the board has repeatedly acted beyond its authority and will review its practices at an upcoming audit hearing.

The Alabama Senate passed a bill Tuesday to cut the state sales tax on groceries from 3% to 2%+ sponsored by Rep. Danny Garrett, which gives cities and counties more flexibility with their local taxes.

The measure now goes to Governor Ivey for approval.
